For years, Dallas food lovers have sought out Kuluntu Bakery for its handcrafted sourdough loaves, flaky pastries, and strong sense of community. Now, the beloved bakery has opened its first permanent storefront in East Oak Cliff, bringing a unique blend of artisan baking and South African-inspired hospitality to one of Dallas’ fastest-growing neighborhoods. The bakery operates as a community-driven nonprofit bakery, growing from a cottage bakery into a brick-and-mortar space designed for women’s power and collective action.
Located at East Dock near the Dallas Zoo, the new bakery represents a major milestone for founder Stephanie Leichtle-Chalklen, whose vision for Kuluntu was shaped by years spent living in South Africa with her husband. It was there that she immersed herself in the country’s baking traditions, learned the art of naturally fermented breadmaking, and experienced a culture where gathering around food is a way to build relationships. In South Africa, the longtime baker perfected her sourdough loaves and Cape Town favorites like buttery, cream-drenched malva pudding, while learning about the country’s diverse culinary influences.
Those experiences continue to influence the bakery today, which started as a home-based business in their kitchen and ran for eight years. Kuluntu generated a loyal local following via pop-ups, farmers’ markets, deliveries, and special events.
The name “Kuluntu” is derived from the amaXhosa language of South Africa and reflects a philosophy centered on community, connection, and caring for one another. While customers may first be drawn in by the aroma of freshly baked bread, the bakery’s mission has always extended beyond what comes out of the oven.

That vision comes to life throughout the new space. Guests can enjoy artisan sourdough, seasonal pastries, cookies, and specialty baked goods while gathering around communal tables designed to encourage conversation and connection. The permanent location also allows Kuluntu to expand its offerings, including menu items inspired by South African flavors and traditions.
That purpose remains at the center of the business today. Kuluntu operates as a nonprofit social enterprise that supports programs focused on women, food workers, and community development. The new East Oak Cliff location creates additional opportunities for educational programming, workshops, and neighborhood engagement.
