Originating in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1987, this fast-casual eatery is celebrated for its fiery flame-grilled, peri-peri chicken and flavorful sauces. Boasting a loyal fan base, Nando’s has flourished over the last four decades, establishing more than 1,200 locations across 30 countries, including another Texas location in Houston.
The heart of Nando’s menu is peri-peri chicken, a culinary delight with hot peppers, lemon, and garlic, born from a cultural fusion from Brazil, southern Africa, and Portugal. For those new to the experience, the ordering process is simple. It is recommended to start with a half chicken and a side, then choose a preferred heat level, ranging from “Plain…ish” to “Xtra Hot.”

Peri Peri, the Bird’s Eye Chilli Pepper introduced to the Portuguese by indigenous Africans centuries ago, is the core of Nando’s flame-grilled chicken. Marinated 24 hours and cooked to order, the chicken undergoes a famous basting technique with additional peri sauce, according to the diner’s chosen spice level when ordering at the restaurant.
The diverse menu also offers sandwiches, wraps, bowls, and salads, with delicious sides like fries, Portuguese rice, corn, Brussel Sprouts with Peri Ranch, Peri Ranch Crunch salad, and Natas (Portuguese custard tart). How about a side of Macho Peas, an English-style mushy peas?
Thirsty guests can indulge in many beverages, including Peach Poncha Lemonade with brandy, Red Wine Sangria, beer, and South African wine.
Nando’s commitment to quality extends to sourcing all its peri peri from 1,400 local farmers in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and South Africa. These farmers receive access to funds, equipment, and seedlings, with a guaranteed commitment from the restaurant to purchase their crops at a fair price, which is predetermined before the growing season starts.
