Houston chicken lovers, head to Houston Avenue today! An Austin-based hot chicken restaurant, Tumble 22, opened in downtown Houston in the former Avenue Grill location at 1017 Houston Avenue.

Founded in 2017 as a food trailer by chef Harold Marmulstein, Tumble 22 serves all-natural chicken raised in Texas. Available as a sandwich, tenders, or bone-in pieces, the chicken comes with six heat levels, ranging from “Wimpy” to “Stupid Hot.”

The chicken is fried and coated in Chef Marmulstein’s secret blend of spices, including cayenne and spice dip. The essential parts of the dish are chicken, a combination of spices, and hot oil cooking.

You can order family packs, and you can also order grilled chicken sandwiches and salad.

If you want more than just chicken, you can also find Southern-inspired appetizers and sides, such as deviled eggs, mac and cheese, and collard greens. You order your french fries plain or dirty, which is topped with cheese, hot chicken, and pickles. Tumble 22 knows everyone loves dessert and serves five different pies — apple, pecan, buttermilk, chocolate, and blueberry streusel. They offer milkshakes, too.

Tumble 22 features a full-service bar that includes TVs for watching sports. Plus, a pickup window on the north side of the building expedites to-go orders.

The new joint will celebrate its grand opening on September 12 with samples, a kids’ coloring contest, and a raffle to win free chicken for a year. The restaurant will donate all its profits on that day to the Memorial Hermann Foundation and Fresh Arts.

Before Tumble 22, CEO Doug Thompson served as COO for Texas Roadhouse. The company seeks to continue to flourish with four locations in Austin and now two in Houston.
