A cool new taproom, FermenterĆa, recently opened at 2243 E. Commerce in San Antonio, serving a brand-new drink concept called hard water kefir. The bar was in a soft-opening phase for the past two weeks, but now itā€™s ready to serve San Antonians this healthy, sparkly beverage.

FermenterĆa owner and University of Texas at Austin alum Jade Sheppard learned the craft in Nicaragua and spent some time in Texas gaining knowledge of the commercial process.

As an alternative to beer, hard water kefir is a naturally fermented beverage with hundreds of strains of probiotics, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The drink is made with only water, kefir crystals, organic raw cane sugar, and the magic of natural fermentation. Unlike kombucha, an acquired taste, water kefir is sweet and mild. Combined with fruits, it is like a zero-sugar natural soda.

FermenterĆa offers hard water kefir beverages with approximately 100 calories and 5% alcohol content. The taproom serves flavors such as orange elderflower, Thai lime coconut, and hibiscus sangria. Additionally, the taproom serves non-alcoholic drinks like strawberry lime tulsi and butterfly pea tea lemonade.

The taproom will host its first monthly community event on April 13, from 6 pm to midnight. Some sales proceeds each month will be donated to a local nonprofit, and some of the April event profits will go to the Thrive Youth Center, a shelter for LGBTQ+ youth.

The FermenterĆa taproom will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. More information is available at fermenteria.com.
