As school cafeterias close for summer and families face rising costs, many local North Texas families brace for the long summer ahead with a strong focus on feeding their children. To address this, the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) and the University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) are hosting a free drive‑through mobile food distribution this Friday, July 18, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (or until supplies last), on the UNT Dallas campus at 7300 University Hills Boulevard.
The public is welcome to participate in this event, and no ID or pre-registration is required. Those who attend the event will receive about 60 pounds of fresh produce and other pantry staples per family. Volunteers from NTFB, along with UNT faculty, students, and staff, will load food into trunks of participating vehicles. Families and individuals should plan to come early as long lines typically form before the event begins.
The summer break disrupts access to free or reduced‑price school meals. Many households struggle to fill extra meals per week for each child. According to the NTFB, in the NTFB’s 12‑county service area, nearly 744,000 people, including over 250,000 children, face ongoing food insecurity.
According to UNT Dallas, the university has hosted monthly mobile pantry events since 2020. This year alone, these events have delivered roughly 140,000 pounds of food, reaching over 1,500 families and 7,000 individuals. These efforts are part of an on-campus initiative, including the Trailblazers Care Pantry, which provides groceries, hygiene products, and career support to students.
