Wünder Pig’s skilled pitmaster is set to open his new barbecue restaurant, Black Gold, in Crestview in Austin, starting on November 9. His food truck, Wünder Pig, has closed down after eight years, so this driven pitmaster is on to bigger and better things – transforming a former van customization shop into an upscale barbecue restaurant with a neighborhood vibe.

Chef, owner, and pitmaster Mems Davila envisions Black Gold as both a laid-back barbecue joint and a refined dinner and cocktail spot, according to the press release. The restaurant’s website referred to the name Black Gold as the salt and peppery bark smoked meats that are affectionately held with high esteem among pitmasters, etc.

Guests can enjoy a chef-driven experience and table service with an array of smoked meats and plated dishes that celebrates Davila’s roots in the Rio Grande Valley and Mexican heritage. Diners can try Texas barbecue staples like brisket and jalapeño-cheddar sausage, as well as elevated offerings like candied pork belly burnt ends, smoked crispy duck with poblano cream sauce, brisket tacos, wagyu smash burgers, and botana platters with tortilla chips, guacamole, and fajita meats. For dessert and to finish on a sweet note, there are twists on churros and ice cream made with Big Red.

The restaurant boasts a stage for live music and an expansive cocktail menu, including innovative drinks like the Oaxacan Old-Fashioned and the popular Black Gold margarita dusted with gold sugar flakes.
